Cladonia spp.
{Cladonia = club-like}
Species of the Cladonia genus can be difficult to differentiate; some species can only be identified with chemical tests, while others require microscope work for an accurate identification. Members of the Cladonia genus start off as a cluster of very small scales, then grow into the more conspicuous fertile clubs. Below are some examples, some of which have been tentatively identified. Confirmed species on Calvert Island are Cladonia chlorophaea, C. macilenta (lipstick cladonia), and C. scabriuscula.
